It's 1982, turkey hunting season, sometime in the fall and it is time for the guys to arrive at their camp in Avonmore, Pennsylvania "outpost 39" as painted on Uncle Carl's sign in front of the place. Avonmore is a borough in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 820 at the 2000 census. Area: 1.6 sq miles (4.144 km) near the Kiskiminetas River.
I often buy comical cards to send to folks on birthdays, etc. I think I can use some of Uncle's photos to make my own...I need the right sentiments printed along with the photo.
This has been my Sepia Saturday post. For more laughs and so much more interesting information, check out the link to the host site where so many others have so much to share.

Well, you didn't mention those bell things on Carl's pants or his girlfriend's shoes (I don't think they had Crocs in 1982, did they??). Yeah, that was some look. Good thing he had a hunting lodge - no telling what he might have done in the city to embarrass the family. LOL
ReplyDeleteI think the bell shaped were pant waders that they used for fishing and wading into streams, althuogh I have never seen bell shaped...the shoes were probably old rubber boots.:-)
DeleteThe locals must have shaken their heads in disbelief as the strange turkey hunters arrived on the scene.
ReplyDeleteBecause it was such a small town area, the people were probably paying not a sliver of attention to the odd guys who went to the camp....likely ignored them
DeleteI just read the Wikipedia page on wild turkeys, I suppose I should have realised they were indigenous to N America, but as we don't do Thanksgiving here the obvious connection had not occurred to me.
ReplyDeleteThose guys look like they had a lot of fun. The turkey photo would be good for a Thanksgiving card.
ReplyDeleteNow there's an idea with the caption, "we brought him down for you..."something like that
DeleteDid you notice the guy sitting nonchalantly in the background? Maybe Cliff always wore such a strange get up as the man in the background isn't even looking at him!
ReplyDeleteYes I think they were all used to themselves, they had outings together for years and I remember Carl talking about how one would try to outdo the other..to me Cliff holds a prize.
DeleteI LIKE Uncle Carl!
ReplyDeletePerhaps shooting a turkey would have been so ridiculously easy that they had to dress up like that to give the turkey a sporting chance.
ReplyDeleteMy grandfather in PA had a hunting cabin. My dad said all they did was drink coffee and talk. Never killed anything. That was a blessing. However, during the Depression my grandfather did go hunting on a regular basis to bring home food. He killed a squirrel thinking she had a nut in her mouth. It was her baby. He brought the baby home and it became my mother's pet, Jiggs.
ReplyDeleteLooks a load of fun, except for the turkey.
ReplyDeleteSome people just like any excuse to dress up and it certainly seems as if on this occasion it raised a laugh. Adding your own captions to the pictures for cards is a great idea.
ReplyDeleteOne thing is for sure, your Uncle Carl and his friends knew how to have a good time and a good laugh at themselves. The hunting may have been just a reason to get together.
